JPA Scholarship Interview 2010

Today is an important day for a lot of people including myself because JPA Scholarship Interview 2010 starts today. Any readers who are also going to JPA interview, you are lucky. Because I’m the first batch to receive interview in 2010. So I’ll be writing down some important things and my experience, trying to help anyone who are still preparing.

For penangties, I think you all would choose Kepala Batas. It’s not that easy to find so i would recommend you all to at least bring a GPS or go once before the day. Some of my friends and their parents had a hard time finding the place so guys, be prepare. Google Map first or at least asked someone who really know the place well.

Guys, please wear formal: long sleeve shirt (no T-shirt please), black slack pants (no jeans!), TIE (very important), belt and Kasut Batu (those shining and annoying sound shoes, ask from your father).

Girls, please wear Baju Kurung. It’s a very important factor.

THINGS TO BRING:

You all should have printed the surat temuduga from the internet when you know you are coming to interview. On the second page it was the checklist of things to bring, please follow and bring everything they stated. For bottom part, please photocopy and certify the things they said you need to photocopy. And PLEASE PHOTOCOPY BOTH YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER‘s DOCUMENT. I didn’t photocopy my mum’s one and they don’t accept my photocopy set of document. This is crap. LOL.

For the top part, arrange your document and certificate according to the list, put and arrange them in a clear holder. For example, first page, your surat, second page, your ic, third page, your birth certificate… and etc. They will flip through it to give you marks for cocuriculum part.

Other things that are not stated: Well, pen. You’ll need to jot down point when you’re inside for discussions.

Upon reaching the place, first walk around and search for the place where your name is on a board. Sign on the board, find which panel you are in, which is something like a room, then go to the door of the panel, there will be a big table with two secretary there. Sign again. Make sure you sign twice. Then wait.

You will all be divided into group according to where your name is. 5 person in a group normally. It will take around half to one hour for every group. So if your name is really behind, then go for a walk, have your breakfast or drinks if you’re hungry or thirsty, go to toilet and don’t be too nervous.

Well and for myself, I’m the 20th guy in Panel 1. So i actually waited at least 4 hours before my turn. There should be a lot of very good students over there. I met a lot of friends coming back from Singapore (they got Asean Scholarship but yet they still come to this interview), friends that are already in colleges, Top 1 and 2 in Penang Chinese Girl High School, and Ooi Hui Lynn, a girl from CGL who got National Scholarship. She’s one of the 30 lucky people. Why she’s here? Well, may be she wanted some experience? Anyway she’s quite pretty for someone who’s so brilliant, It’s so not fair… =(

Alright, so when it’s my turn, I leave my bag outside (you can bring nothing into the room except pen and a paper that they’re going to give you for your draft) and walk in alongside 4 people. Knock the door first, greet them. Walk to the chair, stand until they tell you so sit. Inside the room, the interviewers are all actually quite nice especially the Ketua. They try to let us relax. Actually the interview is not as stressed or as terrible as some would have thought. But one very important thing, PLEASE BRUSH UP YOUR SPEAKING IN BAHASA MALAYSIA or you’re gonna have a very hard time. (Like I Do)

May be I’m just not lucky but the interviewers asked me to speak in BM a lot. So, I think if you want to prepare, just prepare a very good introduction in BM for yourself, and tell them whether are you in a Pre-U course and which college are you in and they’re going to jot it down. Then followed by your aspiration, a little bit about your family, your cocuriculum activity (only the very good ones), some of your life philosophy (not too much please) and why do you choose the course. You are given only 2 minutes so please prepare well for this and try to impress them in just 2 minutes or they’re going to ask you to stop.

If you’re lucky enough, they’ll ask you which country you want to go. No, don’t be too excited, they’re not going to jot down which country and let you go there, they just want to know how well you speak and analyse. So find some country with good points. I said you’re lucky because at least you are handed another chance to speak and impress them again. Too bad I don’t get this chance.

After the introduction, they’ll give you time to do group discussion. It’s a general question about reasons, measures and effect. My topic is Global Warming on the effect of Nation’s Health and Social-Economics. You can discuss the points with those who are in the same group with you. It’ll be in English. So I think it’s quite easy for most of the people. Try to speak often in the group discussion and stand out among your group’s people, but try not to be too arrogant and kill other’s chance. Group discussion means you speak, let others speak, then you add-on again, let other speak, then you speak again.

And the final part, which is the hardest part for me, is a personal question. In personal question, they’ll ask a very general question: Adakah kemiskinan merupakan faktor utama yang menghalang kecemerlangan dalam akademik?

In this sessions, no discussions is allowed, you gotta brain storm for another 2 minutes and think of your own point. But the points are not very important because they’re not going to care or jot down what you said, but they just want to know HOW you speak, in BM. I think they’re looking for people with charisma, fluent speaker and confidence.

And for this part, they request us to speak in BM, and no bahasa pasar is allowed, only very standard BM. So I actually died on this part. I stopped a lot and some of my points are spoken in English, the interviewers gave me a weird and worried look, so basically I’m gone. So please, be prepared to use a lot of BM, unless you’re just lucky enough to evade interviewers who ask for BM answers.

So in overall, don’t be too nervous because the interviewers aren’t really that bad to shoot you. In fact sometimes they’re just nice enough to agree with your points and laugh together with you. Sometimes they will even share a joke with you. So just be calm, talk more, be GOOD IN SPEAKING BM and be confidence.

And it’s quite weird for me because they didn’t ask anything about my course as what most of the people expected. They only ask me which course I’m taking, but they didn’t ask why and what do I know about the course. So I think I’d advise you all not to memorise a whole essay of your course into the room, just read through and know about your course will do.

So good luck everyone. I don’t think I stand any chance for the scholarship anymore after the interview because I didn’t know that Dentistry actually crash with a lot of people who is taking medicine and we’re going into the same room. So for readers, Good Luck, just be calm and natural =)

Pray for JPA

Well, basically I love JPA scholarship. And I really wish I could get it. So, I went to pray for luck in conjunction of Guan Yim’s Anniversary, or kind of birthday. I pray that I can get JPA scholarship to go oversea. Good luck to me, Yiphing, Chien Chern and Tee Jin also. It was so crowded and busy over there. Guan Yim Theng is one of the tourist attractions also because it has already been there for more than 100 years. It’s located at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling near Jetty there in Penang.

Seriously on that day it was extremely crowded. The smoke were so thick and it irritate not only my eyes but my respiratory organs too. And to me it seems to resemble the features of apparitions. Besides that, I also put on earrings spontaneously on that day because there were a stall there. May be, just may be, it could bring me luck?

And to those who do come to Guan Yim Theng for praying once in a while, should take note that there’s actually a few more statues over here, outside the temple and under the big tree on the left. There’s a small red hut. So do come and put your joss stick over here as a sign of respect if you have some joss stick left after putting them in all the pot in the temple.

So after praying, I went to Kepala Batas to search for the place for interview with Chien Chern, Cheong King and Ammerlynn. Then we went to KFC to have a feastful… tea time? Lol, it was suppose to be the lunch but we have it on 5.30pm, thanks to we don’t know what to eat over there.

We reach Simon’s house on around 7pm. Manchester United V.S. Chelsea in a premier league match. We watched it with HD Astro Beyond. It was so clear and Manchester United has a bad game, they lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Congratulations Ancelotti.

Equator Graduation Exhibition

Today after school, me and 3 friends went to Equator Graduation Exhibition in the hall of somewhere near my college.

The Place

The Place

We went there because Huan Jie’s brother is a graduate from Equator Academy of Arts, so we went there to have a look.

Namecard

Want do interior design for your house or your room? Find him, or Nicholas

Four of us walked there.

Four of us

Ignore the 3 guy, what I wanted to show is how green is the area outside Disted, environmental friendly =)

And then we walked past this International School. Lol, the field is larger than the building itself. So I was thinking, if only I’m rich, I’d come here for my primary education, Han Chiang for my secondary education, then go to Taylor’s AUP, then fly to US. But whatever, It’s always a dream. Only if I were rich, or I’m a genius, or I have enough confidence, or I’m determined or I’m hardworking enough. Nope sorry, I ain’t one of these.

International School

Envious? It's just a dream

The following photos are what I taken on the exhibition. Enjoy.

Although some of the works are really nice, but as Nicholas said, since it is a Graduation Exhibition, everything is going to be nice, it doesn’t really matter what students or which school. So, congratulations =)

So after the exhibition, Chien Chern came all the way down from Inti to have dinner with me. I rendered him my service as a chauffeur and drove him to search for place for our dinner. As usual, we’re so picky that we searched at least 3 places before we can finally decide what we wanted to eat. After we discussed and search a few restaurants and hawker stalls, we finally arrived at a compromise, which we decided to eat at a Hong Kong Style restaurant hidden in a secluded part of One-Stop.

After assuaging our pangs of hunger, it’s time to relax our mind. After all it’s Friday and I deem that we should dispose our brain after using it for one week, as what Reflux92 said. So we went to CS-2 opposite of Pu Ti to spend one hour there. We finish the hardest part which we took 3 hours to play with Raykee & Nick in 9 minutes. We finish another map which took CC, Nick and Zez 50 minutes in less than 40 minutes. Congratulate us, we don’t even need first aid. LOL

Random Days in School

For these few days, I went to school, then break for lunch time, then go back to school again, wait for school dismissal then drive 40 minutes home through the rush hour, follow by lots of homework and reports to do, then sleep. Days without friends and busy study life is indeed killing me and my mind off. My only extrication from such hectic yet boring life style is only when I get the chance to write this blog on behalf of Yiphing and express my feeling. This is Arron in custody of Yiphing.net for the 3rd post, Hi, readers =)

Min Sheng & Xiu Xin

Both of this guys are my classmates but they are far smarter and are both genius to me

Sometimes I’ll have my lunch with them in the canteen of Disted. Readers, meet two smart guy in Disted. Sometimes when I get too bored, I’ll go around my campus and take pictures of the building. Seriously I think this building is quite old but yet classical, I love the feel… But only before I came in. Lol.

Disted-Stamford College Penang

Isn't that a white and beautiful building?

The notice board

Alright, this is really random. Sometimes when I get bored during Chemistry Class, I’ll take out this, cute little Spider-Man, a souvenir from Bangkok by Nicholas 2 years ago. Normally it’ll be clustered in my pencil box with those pens and pencils stabbing on it, but today, I’ll take him out to show you all. Ta Dang!

Spider-Man

Thanks Nicholas

And lastly this was when I go home. If any of you have become my passengers before, you should know that I’m not an accomplished exponent in driving. My friends especially Chien Chern, Edmund, Min Sheng or Tee Jin would all say that I drive either too slow, or simply too safe. However, today I’m gonna show a picture… about… I took a picture of my speedometer when I was driving on highway. Hey Kids, don’t try this at home, It’s dangerous! =p

Speedometer

Don't try this at home kids, It's for professional only xD

Eh come on, I know you would say it’s nothing because it’s just 70km/h. But, to be honest to you all… Actually… My maximum speed is 80km/h. LOL! So forgive my sluggish driving speed, just make concession for I’m driving you. Haha

Welcoming A Friend Who Came Back From Australia

This is Arron writing blog. I would like to introduce you all a friend of mine, who came back from Melbourne, Australia for the first time since he migrated there 2 years ago. We were best friend back then, now he’s back again for a short visit so we went to his apartment in Pantai Jerejak Residential Area, Century Bay Apartment to have hotpots.

Kean Ming

CKM, from Melbourne

We went to Queensbay to get our materials for hotpots. It was raining so heavily that the road outside my house flooded.

Dark Clouds

Just by looking at the dark clouds indicate that storm is impending

The dark clouds that obscured the sky actually scared me because it looks like as if it was going to inundate us. But anyway, we’re securely staying in the apartment together having hotpot. It is always nice to have hotpot together with old friends in an apartment when storm and fierce flashes of lightning are outside. I could really feel that it’s so warm inside.

Sausages and Crabsticks

A lot of sausages and crabsticks

Yummy

And after we put everything in, we covered the hotpot. Then here comes the “aftermath”.

Gosh, doesn't that makes you hungry?

Pork Belly, Sausages, It's simply tempting and inviting

Well I think that’s all for the day, Welcome Back Kean Ming. And for dear readers, this is Arron taking over Yiphing’s blog Post 2. She’s in NS now, everything is fine, except that she is in serious homesick. She’s very bored, but don’t text her until weekends because her phone is kept by the trainers now.

Sending Friends To NS In Pisa

28th of March was the real day when Nicholas and Raykee will have to board bus and off to National Service. They registered and gathered at Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) early on the Sunday morning.

PLKN Bus

I love "1 Malaysia"

Nicholas will be off and therefore his blog will be in away status for at least 2 months. Blog readers, do miss him then, and also his hair. But seriously he looks macho in bald.

Nicholas Chan

Bye Nick

The very one thing that I really admire about Nicholas is his versatile life style and optimistic mind. He can suit himself well and get with anything that he is going to face. Some thinks Nicholas will not go to NS because he will have to leave his Canon, Nexus One, Blog, Friends, Comfortable and luxurious home, beautiful clothes behind to go to National Service. However, he proved that he fit himself just well to any living condition. His ability to adapt to the environment is always exemplary.

Raykee

Raykee looks cool

And for Raykee, I deemed he was so zealous and excited to go to National Service. When I sent him, he hadn’t really say much. He seemed that he wanted to get to the camp as soon as possible so he went up the bus as soon as he got there and registered himself. But anyway, all the best, buddy.

After the bus departed, I went to have breakfast with Alvin Ng at somewhere near Bayan Baru.

Alvin Ng

Alvin, from The One Academy

And this is special introduction for his camera, Nikon D90. I personally think that the image captured by this camera is so sharp and clear.

Nikon D90

Nikon D90 with Milo Peng beside, quite nice also

After the breakfast, we all went home. Then I went to watch the movie “Just Another Pandora’s Box” with my family in GSC Queensbay.

GSC Queensbay

So many people lining up

Just Another Pandora's Box

Just Another Pandora's Box

I think this movie is quite funny on some parts, but overall I don’t like it too much because it has no storyline. It’s just simply too crazy. 3/5 for my rating.

And then we went to Nando’s in Queensbay to have our dinner. It’s more like Mediterranean Food. I think everyone knows about what’s in Nando’s and the Peri-Peri quarter chicken so I’m not going to talk about it. Instead, I’m going to talk about this special sidelines, Chips with this secret special recipe powder, Peri-Peri Powder.

Chips

Sorry the powder could not really be seen due to low quality camera shots

I prefer the chips in Nando’s than those in McDonald because the chips has a lot of potato in it so it’s rather juicy when you bite it while those in McDonald are quite salty and without potato stuffing inside.

And lastly, hey, I know some of Magnificent Six will not see this but I’d like to ask, Hey Magnificent Six, when wanna come my house cook Korean Mee wor? Last time Tom Yam Mee and Spaghetti, now Korean Mee and Macaroni, how’s that? Haha.

Korean Instant Noodles

Hey, I'll wait you all come back we'll cook again kay?

That’s all for my day. Day 1 without complete Magnificent Six. Oh ya, and since Yiphing is going to NS, I, Arron Lim will be taking over her blog for 2 months. Readers, Hi =) Please continue supporting yiphing.net, I love you all, Sarang Haeyo!
